Best Pet Insurance for Dogs in Can Tho? Here’s My Honest Take.

Best Pet Insurance for Dogs in Can Tho? Here’s My Honest Take.

So I’m sitting here looking at the receipt from the vet.

A routine checkup, some shots, plus bloodwork for my dog’s weird tummy thing.

The total? Over 2 million VND.

And that was just a normal Tuesday morning. No surgery, no emergency.

We moved to Can Tho two years ago.

I remember thinking vet care would be cheaper here than in Saigon.

It’s not.

Between the rainy season illnesses and the random stuff my dog eats off the street, vet bills add up fast.

Why your dog’s stomach ache could cost two million dong

Yeah, I said two million.

Last December, my dog had gastroenteritis. Vomiting, lethargic, the whole awful scene.

Nighttime emergency visit at Can Tho University vet clinic.

X-rays, IV fluids, meds.

Bill came out to almost 3.5 million.

And that’s why I started looking into pet insurance portal options.

Here’s the thing about Can Tho.

We have some decent vets.

The Practical Veterinary Clinic at Can Tho University is actually pretty well equipped — X-ray, ultrasound, even PCR testing.

But good equipment means higher costs.

You can’t expect to pay village prices for city-level care.

What local pet insurance actually covers (and what it doesn’t)

I looked at Fubon Vietnam’s pet insurance first.

Because they’re the most visible option here.

Their basic plan for dogs costs about 1.8 million VND a year.

Cat coverage is a bit cheaper at around 1.6 million.

But here’s what surprised me.

The reimbursement caps aren’t huge.

Surgery coverage tops out at 6 million on the basic plan.

For an emergency surgery at an actual animal hospital, that might not even cover half.

Depends on the procedure, obviously.

But still.

Something else you need to know.

Fubon excludes certain breeds.

Frenchies, Pit Bulls, Mastiffs — they won’t insure them.

Wish I’d known that before recommending it to my neighbor with a bulldog.

The waiting periods matter too.

Accidents are covered immediately. Illnesses have a 30-day wait.

But serious stuff like cancer or hip dysplasia?

Ninety days before coverage kicks in.

So if your old dog has a heart problem that started before you bought the policy?

Not covered.

That’s basically how pet insurance works everywhere. But it still stings.

Using an online portal to compare plans

This is where things get easier.

A proper pet insurance portal lets you see multiple plans side by side.

Instead of calling different insurers or translating fine print yourself.

Some international companies like Figo have digital platforms.

You can upload vet invoices through an app, submit claims, track everything.

There’s also services like Shory that partner with multiple providers.

All online, no paperwork.

We don’t have a perfect local portal yet. But the pieces are coming together.

How submitting a claim actually works (without losing your mind)

Okay, so you have insurance. Then what?

You go to the vet. Pay the bill upfront.

Most pet insurance works on reimbursement.

Not direct payment to the clinic.

So you need to keep every single receipt.

Take a photo of it. Email it to yourself. Whatever works.

Then log into your provider’s portal.

Upload the itemized invoice.

Need the date of service, the diagnosis, the itemized costs.

Once you submit, expect anywhere from 5 to 15 days for processing.

Some claim they do it in 24 hours.

Some take way longer.

The digital-first companies are usually faster.

Less bureaucracy.

One thing I wish someone had told me earlier

Pet ownership here isn’t the same as in the US or Europe.

We deal with different diseases.

Parvovirus is still common in unvaccinated dogs.

Respiratory infections spread fast in the rainy season.

Most pet insurance policies from Western companies don't understand the local disease risks.

But Vietnamese policies do.

So consider both options.

Ask local vets what conditions they see most.

Then check if your policy covers them.

Final thought

I don’t love paying for insurance every month.

But I hated that moment in the emergency room even more.

That feeling of not knowing if you can afford to say “yes” to the treatment your pet needs.

A pet insurance portal — if we get a good one in Can Tho — would make this whole process less painful.

Till then.

Save the receipts.

Keep the vet’s number handy.

And hug your furry friend a little tighter tonight.

Note: This is just my personal experience with pet insurance in Can Tho. Insurance products change, and prices vary. Always read the fine print and talk to a vet before deciding.
